We can not teach our students until they are ready to receive the knowledge their teacher is going to pertain. That is, we must inspire our learners to know first. How is that?

  • Let them understand ‘what is learning for?’

  • Why are you there to teach?

  • How can they learn?

Next comes inspiring about a particular subject, learning, expectations and assessments. Everything meaningful, critical, challenging, interesting and relevant does not ensure every learner be motivated to care about your expectations or effort. Rather, communicating learning goals and your expectations from them during that particular period is crucial to make them work for you! That is because learners trust teachers and rely on their intellectual perceptions. So, share your thoughts about them, their learning goals, and your expectations from them, they must be inspired!

"Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care" -Theodore Roosevelt

Following are some research-based strategies for motivating students to learn:

  • Become a role model for student interest.

  • Get to know your students.

  • Use examples freely.

  • Use a variety of student-active teaching activities.

    • Teach by discovery.

    • Cooperative learning activities are particularly effective as they also provide positive social pressure.

  • Set realistic performance goals.

  • Place appropriate emphasis on testing and grading.

  • Be free with praise and constructive in criticism.
