Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing materials and instructional methods usable by a wide range of students. It is a way of thinking about teaching and learning that helps give all students an equal opportunity to succeed. The aim is providing full access to the special needs learners through technologies. It ultimately offers significant affordances for all students to benefit for learning presented in through multiple sensory This approach offers flexibility in the ways students access material, engage with it and show what they know. UDL is based on three main principles:

  • Multiple Means of Representation :

  • Multiple Means of Expression

  • Multiple Means of Engagement


"UDL helps educators move away from the idea that students need to change in order to be successful. It has taught us that it is the environment, not the students, that need to change"

What are the benefits of using UDL?

  • Reduces barriers to learning;

  • Increases student engagement;

  • Empowers students to be self directed;

  • Helps students to 'show you what they know'; and

  • Creates a flexible and responsive course design and delivery model.



Seven ways to introduce UDL in a class:


o Start Small and Set Achievable Student Goals

o Know your Students’ Strengths and Weaknesses

o Share content in a Variety of Ways

o Offer Choices for How Students Demonstrate Their Knowledge

o Engage Everybody and Focus on the Whole Environment

o Bring Students on Board

o Create a Flexible Classroom with Furniture and Digital Tools

o Choose and Use Technologies, Materials and Methods Thoughtfully, but Don’t Rely on It

o Give Lots of Feedback to Establish Deeper Learning
